Acrylic vs Resin Dice: The Real Unit Economics
Photographed under studio lights, a swirled acrylic set and a rounded resin set can pass for siblings. On a quote sheet they behave like strangers: one starts at 500 sets for a full custom run, the other at 100; one gets dramatically cheaper as volume climbs, the other barely moves; and the line with the lower minimum is very often the more expensive one per unit. We run both materials in-house — injection acrylic on one side of the floor, hand-poured resin on the other — so this guide walks through the real unit economics of each, and shows you how to pick the material that fits your volume rather than just your mood board.
1. Two processes that only look alike
Acrylic dice are injection molded. Thermoplastic pellets are melted and forced under pressure into a steel mold; the die cools, the tool opens, and a finished blank drops out in seconds. Once the machine is dialled in, it repeats that cycle all day with almost no human touch — the operator's job is monitoring, not making. It is a capital-intensive process: the cost lives in the steel tool and the machine hours, not in the plastic itself.
Resin dice are cast. Liquid epoxy is mixed, pigmented, and poured into molds by hand, then left to cure for hours before anyone can touch it. Demolding is manual. Our sharp-edge line is hand-poured and then hand-sanded through five successive grits to get those razor faces; rounded resin and liquid-core sets go through their own polishing cycles. It is a labour-intensive process: the cost lives in human hours, and every additional set costs roughly the same number of them.
Every difference you will ever see on an acrylic-versus-resin quote — the minimums, the timelines, the way prices move with quantity — flows from that single distinction: one process is fast and machine-driven, the other slow and hand-driven.
2. Where the money actually goes
Break an acrylic quote apart and the stack looks like this: a one-time steel mold (at the YSDICE factory, $600–$2,000 depending on complexity, refunded progressively as your reorder volume accumulates), machine time, a small amount of raw material, numeral painting, QC and packing. Spread that tooling over 500 sets and it is a visible slice of each unit. Spread it over 5,000 and it nearly disappears — which is why acrylic pricing falls so steeply as quantity rises.
A resin quote is built the other way round. The incremental tooling is modest, but every single set carries real hand labour: mixing and pigmenting the pour, filling the molds, demolding after cure, five grits of sanding on sharp-edge faces, polishing, and hand-inked numerals. That labour does not get cheaper at 2,000 sets than at 200 — a person still has to do it to every die. Resin's cost curve is nearly flat.
Put the two curves on the same chart and they cross. Below the crossover, resin is usually the cheaper total spend because there is little tooling to amortise. Above it, acrylic pulls away and never looks back. Most of the surprises first-time buyers experience come from not knowing which side of that crossover their order sits on.
3. MOQs: why acrylic starts at 500 and resin at 100
Our full-custom minimums — a brand-new mold cut for your design — are 100 sets for sharp-edge and rounded resin, and 500 sets for acrylic. Those numbers are not arbitrary. Nobody sensibly builds a steel injection tool and sets up a molding machine to run for an afternoon; the process only earns its keep at volume. Hand-poured resin, by contrast, scales down gracefully — pouring 100 sets is the same craft as pouring 1,000, just fewer benches.

4. Timelines and cash flow
Tooling comes first: a custom steel mold takes 20–25 days to cut. Samples run in parallel logic — 3–5 days for a custom design, or within a week for stock designs, with the sample cost refunded on your first order. Then mass production: acrylic runs 20–25 days, sharp-edge resin 15–20, rounded resin 25–30. It surprises people that rounded resin — the low-MOQ line — is the slowest; cure times and polishing cycles simply cannot be rushed.
Cash flow follows the standard factory rhythm: 50% deposit to schedule the run, balance before shipment, payable by T/T, PayPal, Alipay/WeChat or Alibaba Trade Assurance. Freight is the last variable: express couriers (DHL/FedEx/UPS) land samples and small runs in 3–7 days, while sea freight takes 25–35 days but transforms the per-set cost on volume orders. Most of our clients choose DDP door-to-door so the quote they approve is the total they pay.
Planning backward from a launch date, the arithmetic looks like this: a full-custom acrylic order needs the mold window plus the production window plus freight — comfortably two to three months door to door by sea. A resin order on an existing mold can compress to little more than production plus a courier. Whichever material you choose, the calendar risk is front-loaded: approve the 3D proof and the sample early and everything downstream runs on rails — we dispatch on time on more than 99% of orders, but no factory can ship a sample you haven't signed off.
5. What each material can (and can't) do
Economics aside, the two materials have different visual vocabularies. Acrylic's strength is repeatable decoration: two-, three- and four-colour swirls, glitter, translucents, pearly marbles and glow-in-the-dark — all locked into a process that makes set number 4,000 identical to set number 4. That consistency is exactly what retail chains and board-game publishers need.
Resin's strength is depth. Because it is poured as a liquid and cures clear, it can hold things acrylic cannot: suspended inclusions, foils and florals, liquid cores that swirl when the die moves, and the glass-flat faces of a sharp-edge set. These are the dice that get photographed, filmed and collected — and their labour cost is the price of that depth.
Hand-feel diverges too. An injection-molded acrylic die has the familiar light, bright snap of mass-market dice — ideal for bulk table play, classroom packs and anything that ships by the thousand. A poured resin die, especially a sharp-edge one, sits in the hand with the polish and presence of glassware. Neither is "better"; they are different answers for different shelves, which is why many brands run acrylic for the core range and resin for the collector tier of the very same designs.

7. Hidden line items buyers forget
A unit price is not a landed cost. Four items routinely change the maths after the first quote. Compliance: if your dice ship inside a game or sell to a mass retailer, you will likely need toy-safety documentation — we run EN71 / ASTM testing and provide SGS material reports, and it is far cheaper to plan for that than to retrofit it. Inspection: every order here leaves under a two-stage inspection — once at the workshop that made them, once again before dispatch — with a photo report, whichever material you choose, so budget zero for surprises rather than for rework.
The mold refund: our steel mold fee is refunded as reorder volume accumulates, which quietly rewrites acrylic's economics on your second order — the tooling you paid for on run one is coming back to you on run two. Molds are archived so a reorder colour-matches the original a year later, and 26% of our clients do come back for exactly that. 8. Getting a like-for-like quote
The honest answer to "acrylic or resin?" is always a number, not an opinion — and it changes with your quantity, your design and your channel. Because both lines run in-house here (they are two of the six we operate in Chang'an, Dongguan), we have no reason to steer you toward whichever material a trading company happens to have on hand. We quote both, show you the crossover, and let the arithmetic decide. 9. A worked example: 1,000 sets, two ways
Numbers settle this argument faster than adjectives, so here is a composite of a quote our team prices several times a month. A board-game publisher needs 1,000 seven-piece sets: a two-colour teal-and-copper blend, their sigil replacing the 20 on the D20, standard 16mm bodies, retail-ready packaging. The design works in either material, so we quote it both ways and let the buyer watch the arithmetic do the persuading.
The acrylic route. A steel tool for a seven-shape set at this complexity sits in the middle of our $600–$2,000 tooling band. Cutting it takes 20–25 days, mass production another 20–25, and at 1,000 sets the tooling adds well under a dollar to each unit. The injection price underneath is the lowest in polyhedral manufacturing, and the mold fee is not money burned: at YSDICE it refunds progressively as reorder volume accumulates, so the tool the publisher pays for on run one is quietly coming back to them across runs two and three. By a 3,000-set reorder — no new tooling, the mold pulled from our archive, colours matched against the retained master sample — the per-set cost has fallen to a level resin simply cannot reach.
The resin route. No steel tool, so the upfront commitment is smaller, and once tooling is included the first-order total can genuinely undercut the acrylic programme. Production runs 25–30 days for rounded resin, because cure and polish cycles refuse to be compressed. But here is the catch the first invoice hides: the second order costs what the first one did, and the fifth costs what the second did. Hand labour does not amortise, and no reorder discount can change the number of human hours inside each die.
The deciding question was the forecast, not the design. A one-off crowdfunding fulfilment with no planned reprint leans resin — spend less in total and own no tooling you will never use again. A retail line expected to reprint annually leans acrylic — accept the tooling bill once and harvest the falling curve for years. This publisher was heading into distribution, chose acrylic, and their second print run confirmed the maths: the reorder landed at a fraction of the original per-set cost, with the accumulated mold refund shaving the invoice further still.
10. Five quote-comparison mistakes we see every month
Comparing MOQs instead of programme costs. A buyer sees "100 sets" next to "500 sets" and concludes resin is the accessible option. Sometimes it is. But if the plan was always a thousand-plus units across the year, the resin route means paying flat, labour-led pricing forever, while the acrylic route means one tooling bill followed by the cheapest units in the industry. Compare the twelve-month spend, not the first invoice — the ranking frequently flips.
Comparing FOB against DDP. Dice are dense little objects; freight, import duty and last-mile delivery can move a landed cost by double-digit percentages, and a factory quoting FOB will always look cheaper than one quoting door-to-door. Before you rank two quotes, force them onto the same trade term. We quote DDP by default precisely so the number a client approves is the number they pay.
Skipping the sample stage to save a week. Letting the numeral spec drift between quotes. Injection acrylic numerals are machine-painted in a repeatable pass; sharp-edge resin numerals are hand-inked one face at a time. If one factory's quote includes a metallic-ink upgrade and the other's assumes single-colour paint, you are ranking two different products and calling it a price difference. Pin the numeral treatment — colour, finish, font — before comparing anything.
Treating the material choice as permanent. 11. Quick answers on acrylic vs resin pricing
Is resin "better quality" than acrylic? No — it is differently good. Resin buys visual depth, inclusions and sharp edges; acrylic buys perfect repeatability at low unit cost. Quality, to a factory, means conformance to the approved sample, and both lines leave our floor under the same a two-stage inspection — once at the workshop that made them, once again before dispatch — with a photo report. A flawless acrylic die is not a failed resin die.
Do resin dice carry a tooling fee like acrylic? Nothing like the steel-mold bill. Casting molds for resin are far cheaper to produce and their cost is typically folded into the unit price, which is exactly why resin's minimum can sit at 100 sets. The $600–$2,000 band you see on our quotes applies to injection tooling for acrylic (and to metal dice molds), not to hand-poured lines.
Why is rounded resin slower than sharp-edge? Counter-intuitive but true: rounded resin runs 25–30 days against sharp-edge's 15–20. Rounded profiles need longer tumble-polishing cycles to reach an even gloss on curved faces, and those cycles stack on top of the same cure times. Sharp-edge trades that machine time for hand-sanding, which we can parallelise across more benches.
Can I start in resin and move to acrylic later? It is one of the most common growth paths we support: launch with 100 resin sets to validate the design and the audience, then tool up an acrylic version at 500-plus when a retailer or distributor materialises.
