Inside Dice QC: How We Actually Inspect Your Dice, Twice
A die is a small object that invites very close inspection. Buyers turn it under a lamp, backers film it in macro, reviewers zoom into the 20-face hunting for a soft edge or a smear of stray paint. Quality control matters more per gram in dice than in almost any other tabletop component — which is why a serious factory puts a named, checkable standard behind the word "quality" instead of a vague promise. Ours is a two-stage inspection — once at the workshop that made them, once again before dispatch — with a photo report, backed by SGS material reports and EN71 / ASTM toy-safety testing. This article unpacks what those letters actually mean: how a lot gets sampled, which defects sink a shipment, why most quality is decided long before the final bench, and how to write all of it into your own purchase order.
Why dice QC is unlike other component QC
Most game components are forgiven their flaws. A punchboard with a slightly off-centre cut still punches; a rulebook with one pale page still reads. A die is different in three ways. First, it is a precision object — players trust it to be fair, so geometry, weight distribution and numeral placement are functional properties, not cosmetic ones. Second, it lives at eye distance for years; a blemish that would vanish on a shelf unit gets rediscovered every game night, turned toward the light and shown to the table. Third, it is usually the most photographed item in a campaign, which means one flawed set in a reviewer's hands can outweigh a thousand clean sets still in their cartons.
Now add the fact that dice come from wildly different processes. Under our roof, die-cast zinc alloy, hand-poured epoxy, injection acrylic, silicone, wood and hand-carved gemstone all run as separate lines — six materials with six different failure vocabularies. A plating blister, a resin pinhole, a short injection shot and a torn wood grain are caught by different eyes at different stations. No single end-of-line glance can find them all. That is why the sampling standard at dispatch matters, and why everything that happens before it matters even more.
Our two-stage check, in plain words
There is no clever acronym behind how we inspect. Every order is looked at twice, by two different sets of eyes, at two different moments.
The first check happens where the dice are made. Whether a run comes off our own casting and pouring benches or from a partner workshop we have used for years, nothing leaves that bench until it has been checked there. That is the pass that catches process faults while the people who caused them are still standing next to the machine — a short-filled numeral, a mould that has started to drift, a plating batch that came out a shade off.
The second check happens on our side, before the goods move again. For a custom order that means before dispatch. For our in-stock lines it means before the goods go into our own stock room, so that anything already sitting on our shelves has been through it once and does not need to be re-sorted under time pressure when an order lands.
How deep the second check goes depends on the material
This is the part most factories will not tell you plainly: not every line is inspected the same way, because not every line carries the same value per piece. Ours splits into two groups.

"Sorted by eye" is doing real work in that table, and it is worth being honest about what it means. It does not mean a glance at the top carton. It means someone who has sorted these dice for years works through the run at the bench, pulling as they go — and because faults on these lines cluster by mould and by pour rather than scattering randomly, a problem shows up in the first trays rather than hiding in the last. It is a different tool from piece-by-piece inspection, not a cheaper version of it. Where the value per piece justifies the slower method, we use the slower method.
Two things follow from that table. A 1,000-set order does not mean 1,000 inspections — it means 80 sets pulled at random from across the cartons, every die in them examined, with hard accept and reject numbers that leave no room for "it's probably fine". And a single critical defect — anything touching safety or playability — fails the lot outright, no matter how clean the rest of the sample looks.
Critical, major, minor: the dice defect taxonomy
The three defect classes sound bureaucratic until you map them onto actual dice. A critical defect makes the product unsafe or unusable: a burr sharp enough to cut a finger, a numeral layout that contradicts the approved 3D proof, a material that would fail its toy-safety test. Criticals are never averaged away — one is enough to stop a shipment.
A major defect is one a customer would notice and reasonably complain about: a chipped edge, a short-filled numeral, enamel baked in the wrong colour, a plating blister, a bubble sitting proud on the face of a transparent resin die, an inclusion that drifted across a number and made it hard to read. These are the defects the 2.5 limit counts.
A minor defect takes hunting to find: a faint flow line on one hidden face, a micro-pinhole in paint visible only at a raking angle, a whisker of flash along a mold line that wipes away with a thumb. Minors are tallied against the looser 4.0 limit, because sanding and polishing them out of existence entirely would price dice beyond any sensible budget.
What the bench checks on every sampled die
- Numerals — fully filled, baked hard, colour matched to the approved Pantone reference
- Geometry — flat faces, even edges, opposite-face layout matching the 3D proof
- Surface — unbroken plating on metal; clarity, bubble position and inclusion placement on resin
- Set logic — every piece present, drawn from the same batch and the same colour lot
- Packing — correct box or bag, insert fit, logo orientation, counts per carton
QC starts on the line, not at the dispatch bench
Final sampling is a verdict, not a strategy. If defects are being discovered for the first time at dispatch, the order is already late and the argument has already started. So each of the six lines carries its own in-process checkpoints, tuned to the way that particular material fails.
On the metal line, castings are inspected before they travel out to plating — a pit hiding under chrome can never be fixed, so it must never get there. Plating itself runs through two dedicated plating partners and is always done fresh to the order, never pulled from shelf stock, because electroplate dulls as it ages in a warehouse. After plating, the numerals are hand-filled with enamel, wiped back and baked, then checked face by face under the lamp.
On the sharp-edge line, epoxy is hand-poured and every set passes through five grits of hand sanding. The sanding stations double as inspection stations — a sander's fingertips find a flaw before an inspector's eyes do, and a face that will not polish clean is pulled long before it can reach a sample. On the acrylic line, the first shots off the injection press get a first-article check against the proof before the run is released, and cavities are spot-checked through the run so one worn cavity cannot quietly seed a whole carton with rejects.
The photo report: inspection you can actually see
Every YSDICE pre-shipment inspection produces a photo report that reaches you before the goods do. It records the lot size, the sample drawn, and the defects found in each class — and then it shows you the evidence: assembled sets, numeral close-ups, plating under raking light, the packaging exactly as packed, the shipping marks on the sealed cartons.

The report also sits deliberately against the payment structure. Orders run on a 50% deposit with the balance due before shipment — which means the photo report lands at precisely the moment you are deciding whether to release that balance. You are never asked to pay out for goods whose condition you have seen no evidence of, and if something in the report troubles you, the conversation happens while the dice are still on our floor, not on a ship.
Third-party proof: SGS, EN71 and ASTM
Factory self-inspection, however disciplined, is still self-inspection — so it is ringed with outside evidence. Material compositions are documented with SGS reports, so a distributor's compliance officer has paperwork rather than reassurance. For dice and accessories heading to retail shelves, EN71 testing covers the European toy-safety questions and ASTM covers the American ones: the heavy-metal migration, flammability and mechanical-safety points that fulfilment partners and chain buyers actually ask about before they will touch a SKU.
And if your channel demands more, the door is open: third-party inspections and factory audits are welcome. Commission SGS or another agency for your own pre-shipment check, or send your agent to watch a sampling live at the bench in Chang'an. A factory that hesitates at that request is telling you something important. Nine years of polyhedral-dice work on Alibaba — carrying a 4.9/5 store rating across 459 reviews, with at least 99% of orders dispatched on time — is far easier to sustain when auditors are treated as guests rather than threats.
Consistency is a QC outcome too
A defect is not only a scratch. If your second production run arrives a shade greener than your first, that is a quality failure as real as a chipped edge — and it strikes precisely the brands successful enough to reorder. Preventing it is unglamorous archive work: steel molds are stored under the client's name after every run, enamel recipes are recorded as Pantone codes rather than "the blue we used last time", and new pours are matched against retained reference dice from the previous batch before production is released.
The result is that a reorder placed a year later colour-matches the original run closely enough to sit beside it in the same shop display. It shows in the numbers, too: 26% of orders are reorders, and repeat buyers are the harshest inspectors a factory can have, because they hold last year's dice in one hand and this year's in the other.
Writing QC into your own order
None of this needs to be taken on faith — put it in writing. Spell the routine out on your purchase order: "inspected at the workshop and again before dispatch; gemstone, sharp edge and wooden pieces checked individually; zero tolerance on safety or playability defects." Make the photo report an explicit condition of the balance payment. If you are heading to retail, request the SGS and EN71 / ASTM documentation up front, while testing is a scheduled step rather than a last-minute crisis. And start with a sample: custom samples take 3–5 days and let you hold the exact specification in your hand before a production slot is committed.
The production timelines already carry this discipline inside them — 20–25 days for metal and acrylic mass production, 15–20 for sharp-edge, 25–30 for rounded resin. Inspection is not an add-on that delays dispatch; it is the reason the dispatch dates hold.
A worked example: 2,000 sets through the bench
Standards feel abstract until you watch one order pass through them, so here is a recent, representative run with the numbers left in. A European board-game publisher ordered 2,000 sharp-edge resin sets in two colourways to fulfil a crowdfunding campaign. A lot of 2,000 falls in the 1,201–3,200 band of the Level II table above, so the bench drew 125 sets at random — pulled from cartons across the whole stack, first and last pallets included, which for 7-piece sets meant 875 individual dice under the lamp. The inspection itself took one bench a full working day.
The sample surfaced four major defects: two short-filled numerals, one chipped edge that had survived sanding, and one bubble sitting directly over a 6-face, making it ambiguous against the 9. It also logged eleven minors — faint flow lines and off-face micro-bubbles a customer would need a loupe and a grudge to find. Four bad sets in a run that size is a normal, healthy number for hand-poured resin, so the run was released. The four were still pulled and replaced from production overrun — a run passing does not mean known-bad pieces ship — and the photo report, some forty images long, went to the publisher the same evening, China time. Balance paid, cartons sealed, freight booked: the whole verdict, from first sampled die to released shipment, inside twenty-four hours.
Every step of that example happened inside one building in Chang'an. The QC mistakes buyers make
Factories are not the only party who can get quality control wrong. A handful of buyer-side mistakes come across our desk every month, and each one is cheap to avoid once named.
Demanding piece-by-piece inspection on a line that cannot carry it. Buyers sometimes ask for every die to be examined on a mass acrylic or silicone run, reasoning that stricter must be better. On those lines the arithmetic collides with physics and with price: swirl variation and the occasional sub-surface micro-bubble are inherent to the craft, and inspecting a hundred thousand injection-moulded dice individually either lands in your unit price or gets quietly skipped. That is exactly why we reserve piece-by-piece work for gemstone, sharp edge and wooden runs, where the value per die pays for the time. Spend your negotiating energy on the defect definitions instead — agreeing what counts as a reject is worth more than demanding a method.
Writing "no bubbles" instead of defining a bubble. An unmeasurable spec is an argument waiting to happen. "No visible bubbles" means nothing at a bench; "no bubble over 0.5mm, none breaking the surface, none touching a numeral" is checkable in seconds and survives a dispute. The same goes for colour — a Pantone code beats "the teal from the mockup" every single time.
Losing the golden sample. Your approved sample is the physical standard the whole run is judged against. Keep one set sealed and untouched; the buyers who photograph it, bag it and file it resolve any later question in one email.
Asking for certificates at dispatch. EN71 and ASTM testing takes one to two weeks at the lab. Requested at order time, it runs parallel to production and costs you nothing in schedule; requested when the cartons are packed, it becomes the only thing your launch is waiting on.
Confusing the sample check with production QC. A perfect sample proves the specification is achievable, not that piece 4,873 will match it. Only checks during production plus the two inspections at the end prove that — which is why both exist, and why neither substitutes for the other.
Questions buyers ask the QC bench
Can I send my own inspector? Yes, and you will not be the first. Commission SGS, TÜV or any agency for an independent pre-shipment check, or send your own agent to watch the sampling live. Third-party inspections are written into how YSDICE quotes larger orders precisely so retail and distribution buyers can satisfy their own compliance chains without friction.
What actually happens if a lot fails? The lot is 100% re-sorted, defective pieces are reworked or remade, and a fresh sample is drawn under the same rules — typically a three-to-five-day loop depending on what failed. The photo report tells you all of this before the balance payment, so a failed first inspection costs schedule, never money you have already released.
Do boxes, trays and bags get inspected too? Every accessory that ships under your name goes through the same sampling: hinge alignment and magnet strength on boxes, stitching and drawstring pulls on bags, insert fit on trays, logo print position on everything. Packaging defects are counted as majors when they would reach a retail customer, because your buyer unboxes the whole product, not just the dice.
Is a mixed order inspected as one batch? No — per line. A mixed order, say metal sets plus sharp edge resin plus wooden trays, is inspected as separate runs, each by the method its material calls for: the wooden and sharp edge pieces individually, the metal sorted across the run. Each process fails differently, and one shared pass would let the cleanest line cover for the weakest.
Since 2018, this bench discipline has been the least glamorous and most valuable thing Dongguan Yushun Hardware Co., Ltd. does. Dice are small, scrutinised objects bought by people with excellent eyesight and strong opinions; a checkable standard, written down and photographed, is the only kind of quality promise worth making.
