How Liquid Core Dice Are Made (and Sealed to Last)

Every few days an enquiry lands in our inbox that starts the same way: "the dice with the liquid inside — how do you actually make those?" Fair question. A liquid core die looks faintly impossible: a crisp, hard polyhedron with a storm of glitter drifting through its centre, still turning seconds after the roll has stopped. From our floor in Chang'an, Dongguan — where the rounded resin and liquid core line runs alongside our metal casting and sharp-edge pouring — here is the honest, unglamorous answer: the two-shell construction, the engineered fill, the sealing that makes or breaks the product, and what it really takes to put a run of your own into production.

What a liquid core die actually is

Strip away the mystery and a liquid core die is two products nested together. The outside is a conventional precision polyhedron — optically clear resin, flat faces, inked numerals. Buried at its geometric centre is a separate, permanently sealed capsule holding liquid, dye and a drifting payload: fine glitter, mica flake, foil fragments or colour-shift particles. Roll the die and the shell stops dead; the payload doesn't. The suspension inside keeps swirling for several seconds after the die has settled, which is exactly the moment people reach for their phones.

That afterglow of motion is the entire commercial argument. A solid resin die with a static inclusion photographs once; a liquid core die performs on every single roll, and an unboxing that moves is an unboxing that gets filmed, posted and shared. It is also why this category punishes shortcuts harder than any other we make. A lazily poured solid die still works. A liquid core die with a weak seal slowly becomes a cloudy, half-empty ornament — typically about a year after your customer bought it, and usually right before they post about it.

Over the years the line has become a signature of YSDICE — the manufacturing brand under which Dongguan Yushun Hardware Co., Ltd. sells the custom work of its Chang'an factory — and the buyers it attracts fall into three recognisable camps. Kickstarter creators order liquid core as the hero SKU of a campaign, the deluxe tier that anchors the video and justifies the top pledge. Retail store brands order it for shelf differentiation: a solid resin set competes with a hundred lookalikes, while a swirling core stops a browsing customer mid-aisle. And streamers or content teams order it because it is the one die that performs on camera without any help — the roll is the effect. All three want the same things underneath: a centre that stays centred, a seal that stays sealed, and a swirl that still moves when the die is old enough for its owner to feel sentimental about it.

Two shells, one centre of gravity

Production begins with the capsule, not the die. The inner vessel is formed, filled and closed as its own finished component before it ever meets a mold. Only then is it suspended inside the die cavity and the outer resin poured around it on the same rounded-resin line that pours our soft-edge sets. The capsule cures into the shell permanently; there is no joint for a table edge to find.

The detail that separates a fair die from a pretty novelty is centring. The capsule must sit at the true geometric centre of the polyhedron and stay there while the resin gels around it. Let it drift even slightly toward one face and you have cast a permanent bias into the roll — invisible to the eye, obvious to anyone who logs a hundred throws. Good fixtures, patient pouring and a resin viscosity that holds the capsule in place during cure are what keep the centre of gravity where the maths says it should be.

Scale changes the difficulty, too. Liquid cores appear in standard 16mm sets but really shine at larger diameters, where there is simply more window to watch. The bigger the die, the more resin surrounds the capsule, the longer the cure, and the harder it is to chase every micro-bubble out of the pour — which is why oversize liquid core D20s are the slowest single item our resin benches produce.

Mixing a fill that still moves in ten years

The fill looks decorative; it is actually engineered. Three variables have to agree with each other. First, viscosity: too thin a carrier fluid and the glitter crashes to the bottom the instant the die stops, killing the lingering swirl that sells the product; too thick and the payload barely moves at all, freezing into a lava-lamp that never lamps. Second, particle density: the glitter or mica must sit close to the density of the fluid so it hangs in suspension, sinking slowly enough to look weightless but reliably enough to resettle and perform again on the next roll.

Third, chemistry. The dye, the particles and the carrier have to be mutually inert — and all three have to be inert against the capsule wall they will touch for the next decade. A pigment that slowly bleaches, a foil that oxidises in its bath, a fluid that clouds against the shell: each one is a product that looked perfect at the pre-shipment inspection and fails quietly in a customer's dice bag. The boring, stable combinations are the ones that last, which is why we push clients toward proven fills and save the experiments for sampling.

Within those constraints, the payload menu is wider than most buyers expect. Fine holographic glitter is the classic choice — it hangs longest and gives the slow, atmospheric drift most people picture when they say "liquid core." Chunky foil fragments are the opposite personality: dramatic, glinting, faster to settle, excellent for bold branding. Mica powder reads as soft nebula rather than sparkle, and suits muted, elegant colourways. Colour-shift particles change hue as they tumble, effectively animating two palettes in one die. And any of these can ride in a clear fluid or a tinted one — a gold foil in clear liquid inside an amber shell reads completely differently from the same foil in tinted fluid inside water-clear resin. When you brief a colourway, tell us the mood you want as well as the colours; matching payload behaviour to the brand is half the design work.

Sampling tip: a custom sample takes 3–5 days to make. If you're torn between swirl speeds, sample two viscosities of the same colourway and film them side by side on a phone — the clip that looks better on a small screen is the right answer, because that is exactly how your customers will first meet the product.

Sealing is the whole game

Everything above is craft. This is the part that decides whether you have a product. A liquid core die lives its whole life being thrown at hard surfaces, carried through temperature swings, and stared at by an owner who will notice a single millimetre of air where there used to be liquid. The seal has to be absolute — not good, absolute — and it has to stay absolute through years of impacts the die was explicitly bought to receive.

The protection is a double barrier. The capsule carries its own permanent closure, and the cured resin jacket then entombs the entire vessel in solid, seamless material. For the core to fail, both barriers have to fail. The discipline behind that is unglamorous: an inert fill that will not attack the capsule from inside, a capsule wall that will not breathe, full cures before any sanding stresses the shell, and the patience not to rush a die out of the mold a day early.

We do not take the seal's word for it, either. Liquid core work at YSDICE gets torture-tested in ways the customer never sees: sample dice cycled between heat and cold to mimic a summer car and a winter mailbox, because thermal expansion is what turns a marginal closure into a leak; repeated drops onto hard surfaces from table height, because that is the entire job description of a die; and dated retention samples from production runs kept on a shelf in the office, so that when we say a fill combination holds up over time, we are describing dice we can pick up and check rather than a supplier's datasheet. It is slow, unexciting evidence — which is exactly the kind you want backing a product whose failures take a year to appear.

A liquid core set is judged twice — once out of the box, and again a year later when the owner checks whether the core still swirls clean. The second verdict is the one that builds a dice brand.— the rule our resin line works to

The four failure modes a seal must beat

  • Leak — fluid escapes past the closure and the swirl dies in a half-empty core
  • Clouding — fill and capsule react and the once-clear window turns milky
  • Settling — particles clump or sink permanently and never lift again
  • Bubble creep — a tiny air pocket grows with temperature swings until it dominates the core

Demold, sand, ink: finishing the window

Once fully cured, a liquid core die is finished like any premium rounded resin die — with one extra constraint: the entire point of the product is looking through it. Sprues are cut back, faces are sanded through progressively finer grits, and the whole body is polished until the shell reads as glass rather than plastic. Any haze left in the outer resin dulls the show inside, so the polishing stage gets no shortcuts on this line.

Then the numbers. Each numeral is hand-filled with baked enamel, Pantone-matched to the client's specification, so the typography stays crisp against whatever is happening behind it. On a die whose background is literally in motion, numeral contrast matters more than on any solid set — a pale font over a pale swirl is unreadable at arm's length, which is something we flag at the 3D design stage rather than after 500 sets are poured.

Size is the other finishing decision worth pausing on. At 16mm the window is real but modest; at 33mm the capsule can carry noticeably more fluid and the drift becomes the first thing anyone sees; at 50mm a liquid core D20 stops being a die and becomes a desk object that happens to roll. If the core effect is the reason your product exists — a campaign hero, a counter for a card game, a giveaway piece — spend the extra unit cost on diameter. The swirl you fell in love with in a close-up video was almost certainly filmed on the big one.

How we QC a die you can't open

You cannot disassemble a liquid core die to inspect it, so quality control happens through the window. Inspection means working over a lightbox: checking that the capsule sits centred behind every face, agitating each die to confirm the payload lifts, drifts and resettles the way the approved sample did, and walking the seams and faces for haze, scratches or trapped bubbles at the boundary between capsule and shell.

Before dispatch, every order goes through a two-stage inspection — once at the workshop that made them, once again before dispatch — with a photo report, so you see exactly what is in the cartons before the cartons move. Material questions are answered with SGS reports, and where a project needs toy-safety documentation we test to EN71 / ASTM. Third-party audits are welcome on the line — for a product whose failures are slow and invisible, we would rather a client checks too much than too little.

Ordering liquid core dice: the real numbers

Liquid core runs on our rounded resin line, and the ordering maths is the same. Full custom with a new steel mold starts at 100 sets; the mold itself is a one-time $600–$2,000 depending on the design, and that cost is refunded back as your reorder volume accumulates — so a design that sells ends up paying for its own tooling. The mold takes 20–25 days to cut, a custom sample 3–5 days, and mass production on rounded resin runs 25–30 days, the longest window of any of our materials because of cure times.

If you are not ready for tooling, you don't need it to start. Light customisation — your colours and a laser-engraved logo on proven stock molds — starts from just 10 sets with no tooling fee, and factory in-stock rounded designs start from 5 sets (or any mix of materials totalling $500+). Samples of stock designs ship within a week, and the sample cost is refunded on your first order. For delivery, express couriers (DHL/FedEx/UPS) land samples and small runs in 3–7 days, sea freight takes 25–35 days for volume, and most clients simply choose DDP so one price covers the door-to-door journey.

Expect liquid core to price above an equivalent solid rounded resin set, and expect that gap to be honest. The capsule is a second manufactured product hiding inside the first: it is formed, filled, sealed and inspected before the die exists, then hand-centred in every cavity, and the finished die faces a stricter QC gate than solid resin because a trapped bubble or drifting capsule cannot be reworked — it is simply rejected. That extra labour and that higher cull rate are what the price difference buys, along with the double barrier described above. Five speccing mistakes that waste sampling rounds

Every sampling loop costs 3–5 days plus express shipping, so it is worth knowing the briefs that reliably burn a round. These five account for most of the liquid core revisions we produce:

  • 1. Fill the same colour as the shell. A blue swirl inside a blue-tinted shell disappears at arm's length. Contrast between capsule and jacket — in hue, in value, or both — is what makes the core read as a core.
  • 2. Pale numerals over a pale swirl. Legibility problems that are obvious on the table are invisible in a mood board. We flag these on the free 3D proof, but the fastest projects arrive already knowing their numeral colour must win against the busiest frame of the animation behind it.
  • 3. Maximum glitter density. Doubling the payload does not double the drama — past a point it turns the core opaque, kills the sense of depth, and makes the die read as solid. Restraint photographs better, every time.
  • 4. Speccing motion from a slow-motion video. Plenty of reference clips online are shot at high frame rates. If you match a fill to footage that was slowed 4x, the real product will feel frantic. Ask us to film your sample at normal speed on a phone before you approve — that is the honest preview of what your customer sees.
  • 5. Ordering the effect at 16mm when the concept needs 33mm. If every reference image you love is a close-up, your concept is a big-window concept. Sample both sizes once; the answer is usually immediate.

None of these is fatal — each is a briefing conversation, and Queenie has had all five of them hundreds of times.
