The finish decides the colour, the shine, the way light moves across the faces, how fingerprints show, and how gracefully the set ages through years of rolling. Why plating defines a metal die
Raw die-cast zinc alloy is not a finished surface. Straight out of the mold a die is a dull, workshop grey — dimensionally perfect, satisfyingly heavy, and visually unremarkable. Electroplating is what turns that casting into a product: a microns-thin layer of metal deposited onto the surface that supplies the colour, the corrosion resistance and the wear layer your customer's thumb will actually touch.
That has a practical consequence buyers sometimes miss. The weight, balance and crispness of the numerals come from the casting; almost everything the eye responds to comes from the plating. Two campaigns can order the identical dragon-scale mold and, by choosing antique gold on one and black nickel on the other, ship what look like two unrelated premium sets. Plating is the cheapest way to make one piece of tooling feel like an entire product line — which is exactly how many of our repeat clients use it.
A short example of what that looks like in practice. Each die is polished before plating, because electroplating is honest to a fault: it follows every contour it is given. A scratch or a soft edge under the plate does not disappear — it gets a shiny coating that makes it easier to see.
Plating itself is an electrochemical bath process. The polished castings are cleaned, then built up in layers — typically an underplate for adhesion and levelling, followed by the colour layer that gives the finish its name, and where needed a protective topcoat. Different finishes use different chemistry and different bath times, which is one reason a factory quotes them separately rather than as one flat "metal" price. It is also why we route plating through two dedicated partners rather than a general-purpose shop: dice are small, faceted, and unforgiving, and a partner who plates them constantly holds tolerances a generalist will not.
Why zinc alloy underneath it all? Because for dice it hits the useful middle of every trade-off. It casts with enough fluidity to fill fine numeral recesses and sculpted detail crisply; it carries the satisfying heft that makes a metal set feel like a purchase rather than an accessory — a 7-piece zinc set weighs several times its resin twin; and it takes electroplate beautifully, which lighter metals do not without extra preparation. Steel would be needlessly hard on molds and machines, aluminium feels disappointingly light in the hand, and true precious-metal dice price themselves out of every market but one. The 12 finishes, family by family
Our plating menu runs to twelve electroplated finishes. Rather than march through them one by one, it is more useful to group them into four families, because finishes within a family behave alike on the table and in photographs.
A note on names before we begin: plating names are not standardised across the industry. One factory's "antique bronze" is another's "red copper", and "rainbow" covers everything from a subtle oil-slick shimmer to full-spectrum chrome. When you brief us — or any factory — attach a reference photo rather than relying on the name alone. The bright classics — shiny gold, shiny silver, rose gold, bright copper. Mirror-polished, high-glamour surfaces that read as jewellery. They photograph spectacularly under studio light and show fingerprints fastest, which collectors happily accept as the price of shine.
The antiques — ancient gold, antique silver, antique copper/bronze. A darkened finish is applied and then relieved on the high points, so raised detail glows while recesses stay shadowed. This family flatters sculpted molds — dragon scale, skulls, embossed logos — because it does the shading for you.
The dark and moody — gunmetal, black nickel, matte black. Low-gloss, serious, and the best backdrop for coloured enamel numerals. Dark finishes hide handling marks well, which makes them a safe recommendation for dice that will actually be played rather than displayed.
The spectacle finishes — rainbow, pearl and gradient two-tones. Iridescent and colour-shift plating that turns every roll into a light show. These are the finishes that stop a scrolling thumb, and the ones where plating-partner skill matters most, because uneven deposition is instantly visible.
One practical footnote for anyone planning product photography: the families do not light the same way. Bright classics want soft, diffused light — under a hard flash they turn into mirrors and photograph as white glare. Antiques are the opposite: raking, directional light is what makes the relieved high points glow against the darkened recesses. Dark finishes are the most forgiving in any lighting, which is partly why they dominate lifestyle shots. And rainbow needs movement — a static photo captures one slice of the shift, so plan for video or a multi-angle carousel. Fresh-plated, never shelf-aged
Here is the part of the process we consider a genuine policy decision rather than a production detail: we keep no plated metal stock on purpose. Every metal order is cast and plated fresh to that order. The reason is chemistry. Plated surfaces oxidise slowly from the moment they leave the tank — invisibly at first, then as a gradual dulling of shine and a warm drift in tone. A "ready stock" metal set that has sat in a warehouse for eight months does not arrive the way its listing photo looked.

Fresh plating also protects colour consistency across reorders. Because the mold is archived and the plating recipe is re-run rather than pulled from ageing inventory, a reorder plated a year later matches the original run — same bath, same recipe, same week-one shine.

Numerals, enamel and engraving
Plating covers the whole die, numerals included — which is why metal dice numerals are filled afterwards, by hand, with baked enamel. Each recessed numeral is filled, the excess is cleaned back, and the enamel is baked to harden it into the face. Logistics follow the usual pattern for metal. Samples and small runs travel by express courier — DHL, FedEx or UPS — in 3–7 days, while volume orders go by sea in 25–35 days. Most clients choose DDP door-to-door so duties and paperwork are handled before the carton reaches them, though EXW and FOB terms are available for buyers with their own forwarders. On price, the families separate less than buyers expect, but they do separate. The bright classics and the dark finishes sit in the same comfortable band — mature chemistry, predictable bath times, low reject rates. The antiques add a relieving step, so they carry a modest premium. The spectacle finishes cost the most per die: the baths run longer, the deposition tolerances are tighter, and more castings fail inspection, all of which lands in the unit price. Will the plating chip or wear off? Not in normal play, and edges tell the story. Electroplate is a bonded metal layer, not a paint film, so it does not flake the way a coating does; what it can do, over years of hard rolling on hard surfaces, is slowly burnish at the sharpest corners. Bright finishes show this soonest, antiques absorb it into their character, and dark matte finishes hide it almost entirely.
